Metering – Using Specific Testers
Creating specific testers when testing a Meter allows you to test how the Meter will display for a specific member of your audience.
Creating a Tester with an Encrypted Customer Id
If your Meter targets known audience members you will want to create a tester using an audience member’s Encrypted Customer Id, otherwise known by it’s cookie name, oly_enc_id. The Encrypted Customer Id is a unique identifier for customers in your database, and customers who are targeted by the Meter, will see the Meter if their oly_enc_id cookie exists in their browser.
- Identify a customer in your database that you’d like to use to test. In Audience Search the Encrypted Customer Id value is highlighted below:
- Copy the Encrypted Id and paste in the Encrypted Customer Id field in the Metering Testing Tab. Click Add Tester.
- Your tester should now appear in the table below.
- Move your Meter to Test Mode if it’s not already. Once in Test Mode, your tester can now be used to test the Meter on your site.
- To test on your site, you will need visit the site with the Encrypted Customer Id added to the site URL like the following: https://www.examplesite.com/?oly_enc_id=2127B1769801I2W. This will create the Tester records cookie in your browser and allow you to test how the Meter messages will appear for the customer.
Creating a Tester with an Alternate Id
If your Meter targets anonymous audience members you will want to create a tester using an Alternate Id, otherwise known as the Anonymous ID or it’s cookie name, oly_anon_id. The Anonymous Id is a unique identifier for anonymous customers who visit your site.
- To begin testing you will first need to remove your olytics cookies from you browser. You can do so by clearing your cache and cookies by pressing Ctrl + Shift + delete or remove them individually by following the steps below:
- In Chrome, you can do this by visiting the site that will be metered and pressing Command+Option+I (Mac) or Control+Shift+I or F12 (Windows, Linux, Chrome OS). Navigate to the Applications Tab, then click Cookies, and then the domain of your site. In the filter at the top of the popup, begin typing oly and you should see the oly_enc_id and oly_anon_id.
- In Firefox, you can do this by visiting the site that will be metered by selecting Tools > Web Developer > Toggle Tools or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + I or F12 on Windows and Linux, or Cmd + Opt + I on macOS. Once opened, select the storage tab, and under cookies and your domain, find the oly_anon_id and oly_enc_id cookies and delete them.
- In Microsoft Edge, you can do this by visiting the site that will be metered by selecting Tools > Web Developer > Toggle Tools or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + I or F12 on Windows and Linux, or Cmd + Opt + I on macOS. Navigate to the Applications Tab, then click Cookies, and then the domain of your site. In the filter at the top of the popup, begin typing oly and you should see the oly_enc_id and oly_anon_id.
- Once you’ve cleared your Olytics cookies refresh the page and open the Dev Tools according to the steps provided above for your browser. Find the oly_anon_id cookie value and copy to your clipboard.
- Paste the value in the Alternate Id field in the Metering Testing tab. If the value begins and ends with ‘%22’ this text should be removed before clicking Add Tester.
- Move your Meter to Test Mode if it’s not already. Once in Test Mode, your tester can now be used to test the Meter on your site.
- To test on your site, you will just need to visit the site that will be metered. Your Alternate Id will be stored in your browser already so there is no need to append any values to your URL.
